In my coaching practice, I encounter so many amazing people that have forgotten that they are blessed with power of choice. This is just linked to the fast-paced world we live in and how easy it is to get swept away by the demands and distractions that bombard us daily.
Amidst this chaos, the power of choice often gets overshadowed by automatic reactions and habitual patterns. However, the simple yet profound act of choosing can transform our lives in remarkable ways. “I Choose” is not just a statement; it’s a practice that invites us to take charge of our lives, fostering mindfulness, intentionality, and a deeper connection with ourselves and others.
Please join me to explore how we can embrace the power of choice in so many various aspects of our lives.
CHOOSING HOW WE TREAT EACH OTHER. This would seem the most obvious behaviour but has become lots and unintentional. Our interactions with others are a reflection of our inner world. When we choose to treat others with kindness, respect, and empathy, we create a ripple effect that can transform not only our relationships but also our communities. Mindful choices are what brings about change. Here are a few to consider and really not that difficult.
- Let’s start Listening Actively. Instead of merely hearing, choose to listen with full attention. This means setting aside distractions and truly engaging with the person speaking. Active listening fosters understanding and strengthens connections.
- We are not all empaths but we all have a certain aspect of what it means to take care. Practicing Empathy is just trying to put yourself in the other person’s shoes. How would you feel if you were in their situation? By choosing empathy, we can bridge gaps and build stronger, more compassionate relationships.
- The way we respond is critical. It’s not the “what”, it’s the “how.” Try responding with Kindness. In moments of conflict or misunderstanding, choose kindness over anger or frustration. A calm and kind response can de-escalate tension and open the door to constructive dialogue.
This is a tough one. CHOOSING HOW WE TREAT OURSELVES. Self-compassion is the foundation of a fulfilling and balanced life. Self-talk and choosing what we say to ourselves and how we treat ourselves sets the tone for how we interact with the world. Being practical is a start and I would like to share a few ways to practice self-care through intentional choices.
- Self-Compassion. Just like to others, be kind to yourself. When faced with failure or setbacks, choose to be gentle with yourself. Acknowledge your efforts and remind yourself that it’s okay to make mistakes. Self-compassion fosters resilience and a positive mindset.
- Something we resist is setting boundaries. Recognize your limits and choose to set healthy boundaries. This might mean saying no to additional responsibilities when you’re feeling overwhelmed or taking time for yourself without guilt.
- Prioritizing Self-Care. Make a conscious choice to prioritize activities that nourish your mind, body, and soul. Whether it’s through exercise, meditation, reading, or spending time in nature, self-care is a crucial aspect of living intentionally.
CHOOSING HOW WE RESPOND is still in our power. Life is unpredictable, and we can’t control everything that happens to us. However, we can choose how we respond to life’s challenges and opportunities. I would like to offer some mindful choices in how to respond.
- Start with pause and reflect. When faced with a challenging situation, take a moment to pause and reflect before reacting. I use a technique well-known, counting back from 5. 5,4,3,2,1. This pause allows you to choose a response that aligns with your values and goals.
- The negative state has become the norm. Embrace Positivity. Choose to focus on the positive aspects of any situation. While it’s important to acknowledge difficulties, maintaining a positive outlook can help you navigate challenges with grace and resilience.
- I am sure my clients are tired of hearing me say this but Practice Gratitude. Regularly choose to acknowledge and appreciate the good in your life. Gratitude shifts your focus from what’s lacking to what’s abundant, fostering a sense of contentment and joy. Journal at least once a day and note what you are grateful for.
CHOOSING HOW WE FEEL. Our emotions are powerful, and while we can’t always control them, we can influence how we experience and express them. Here are some choices to help manage emotions mindfully and to be present in how we make them.
- Know what you are feeling and acknowledge the emotions. Instead of suppressing or ignoring your emotions, choose to acknowledge them. Recognize what you’re feeling and why, allowing yourself to process emotions in a healthy way or ask me to help you do this.
- Anxiety to the emotions you are feeling can be relieved with Mindful Breathing. Use your breath as a tool to centre yourself. When emotions run high, taking a few deep breaths can help you regain composure and choose a more measured response.
- As a coach, I am always here to help. Seek Support. When emotions feel overwhelming, choose to seek support from friends, family, or a mental health professional. Sharing your feelings can provide relief and perspective.
CHOOSING TO LIVE IN THE PRESENT MOMENT is all we truly have, yet it’s easy to get caught up in regrets about the past or worries about the future. Choosing to be actively present enhances our well-being and enriches our experiences. We utilize many different tricks and tools, but we must be aware of them. I will illustrate a few.
- Incorporate mindfulness into your daily routine through Mindfulness Practice. This could be through meditation, mindful walking, or simply paying full attention to your current activity. Mindfulness helps anchor you in the present.
- Engage Fully in whatever you’re doing. Whether it’s a conversation with a friend, a work task, or a leisure activity, being fully present enhances the quality of your experiences.
- Oh wow! This is a big one. Letting Go! Practice letting go of what’s beyond your control. By accepting things as they are and focusing on what you can influence, you create space for peace and contentment.
